Introduction: The Power of Well-Defined Goals
As coaches, we know that progress rarely happens by accident. Clear goals provide direction, focus, motivation, and a benchmark for measuring success. This workbook is designed to be a collaborative tool for you and your clients, helping them move from vague aspirations to actionable plans.
Section 1: Discovering Your 'Why' - Values & Vision
Goals are most powerful when connected to deeper values and a compelling vision for the future. Use these prompts with your client:
- Values Clarification: What principles are most important to you in life/work? (e.g., Growth, Connection, Health, Freedom, Impact). List your top 5. How does your coaching goal align with these?
- Future Self Visualization: Imagine yourself 1 year (or 5 years) from now, having achieved your goal. What does it look like? What does it feel like? How has your life changed? Write down the details.
- Motivation Check: On a scale of 1-10, how important is achieving this goal *to you*? Why did you choose that number? What needs to happen to make it a 10?
Section 2: Understanding SMART Goals
Vague goals lead to vague results. SMART goals provide clarity and focus:
- Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? Who is involved? Where will it happen?
- Measurable: How will you know when you've achieved it? What metrics will you track?
- Achievable: Is this goal realistic given your current resources, constraints, and timeline? What steps are needed?
- Relevant: Why does this goal matter to you? How does it align with your overall vision and values?
- Time-bound: What is the target completion date or timeframe? When will you check in on progress?
Example: Instead of "Get Fitter," a SMART goal might be "Complete a 5k run in under 35 minutes by October 1st by following my training plan 3 times per week."
Section 3: SMART Goal Crafting Worksheet
Use this template with your client to define their key goals:
Goal 1:
Specific: (What exactly will you achieve?)
[Client answer space]
Measurable: (How will you measure success?)
[Client answer space]
Achievable: (Is this realistic? What first steps?)
[Client answer space]
Relevant: (Why does this matter to you?)
[Client answer space]
Time-bound: (By when?)
[Client answer space]
(Repeat template for Goal 2, Goal 3 if desired)
Section 4: Introducing the GROW Model for Action Planning
Once a goal is set, the GROW model helps structure the conversation around achieving it:
- Goal: What do you want to achieve? (Confirm the SMART goal)
- Reality: Where are you now in relation to the goal? What have you tried already? What's working/not working?
- Options/Obstacles: What *could* you do? Brainstorm all possibilities. What might get in the way? How can you overcome obstacles?
- Will/Way Forward: What *will* you do? What specific actions will you take? When? How committed are you?
Section 5: GROW Model Planning Worksheet
Apply the GROW model to one of your SMART goals:
Goal (From SMART):
[Client fills in]
Reality (Current situation? What's been tried?):
[Client answer space]
Options/Obstacles (What could you do? What barriers?):
[Client answer space]
Will/Way Forward (Specific actions? Timeline? Commitment level?):
[Client answer space]
Section 6: Bringing it Together - Tracking & Accountability
Setting goals is the start; consistent action and tracking are crucial for achieving them. Discuss with your client how they will track their progress on the actions identified in the 'Will' stage. Regularly reviewing these goals and progress metrics keeps momentum high.
Remember to add these well-defined goals and action steps into your MyCoachBoard client profiles to easily monitor progress, facilitate check-ins, and celebrate milestones together!
Conclusion: Well-defined goals provide the roadmap for transformative coaching journeys. Use these frameworks to empower your clients and guide them toward measurable success.
